Uncertain that they'll respond in a timely fashion. Does she have a camera? Can she take a photo from a safe distance? Can she continue to monitor their activity?
Possible bike theft in progress!
My wife just called to say that a man who was walking up our street noticed the bikes on the porch of the apartment building across the way. He is on the porch now looking at the bikes (I believe they are locked to the rail; I'm not sure how) and she thinks he is trying to steal one. She asked if she should call the police and I said yes. Will they actually respond to something like this?
She called. While they were en route, they guy seemed to give up and walk back the way he came. My wife was still on our front porch and he gave her a strange look. The cops came, she gave a description, and they went to look for him.
I thought the same thing about the photo. She actually runs a photography business, so she could have gotten a really nice pic of him, but she was carrying our newborn and wrangling a 4-year old, so no camera.
Wow that's ballsie. Make sure that a police report was made - they will usually give you the report number when they do. Prop's to your wife for keeping an eye on the neighborhood, I wish more people would be as observant.
Also, remember to always use a good u-lock even if on your own porch/balcony. There were a few bikes stollen from second floor poorches last year if I can remember correctly.
It's possible the guy gave your wife a funny look because she was preventing him from obtaining the pharmaceutical substances his body craves.
On the other hand, sometimes I check a bike out just because I think it's cool. Usually when I have my bike with me, though, so I have bike geek cred.
Either way, she did the right thing to call. I would advise either staying indoors or talking loudly on a cell phone.
P.S. You might want to warn the neighbors in question, if you haven't already.
Right. I plan on doing so as soon as I see someone from that building.
