Pulled over riding today

I have no idea how to post a photo but I was pulled over riding today. I was told the new state law prohibited cyclists riding two abreast. So, good luck out there.

PA Vehicle Code Chapter 35, Section 3505, subsection e "Limitation on riding abreast"

Persons riding pedalcycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of pedalcycles.

Um... If it's prohibited, it's not the new law (Act 3 aka HB 170) that did it.

Two abreast is still legal AFAIK. Where exactly were you pulled over? Township? City? Did you get a ticket?

Corrigan Dr in South Park. Did not get a ticket, just an "explanation".

Allegheny County cop. I have some good photos.

As I told Bricker on Facebook I will gladly pay for a Bike PGH membership (for someone, I already am one) if Bike PGH will make a phone call.

You should've asked him for a ticket. That way, you could've met him at court to witness his getting an "explanation" from the judge.

Also: South Park lol. Seems fitting.

Not my place to ask for a ticket. Riding two abreast, by definition, involves another person.

"You" can refer to more than one. Just sayin.

Were you going southbound, where there's a bike lane, or northbound, where there isn't?

The bike lane doesn't seem wide enough to ride two abreast, plus I find there are often pedestrians in it.

What a surprise! Stupid people who can't do their jobs correctly! ..Especially a cop.

Chris, if you can tell me what station to call and the name of the officer I'm happy to make a call.

Where it's 4 lanes of traffic, and the speed limit is 25? Oh well, don't take it personally, or even as a "cyclist" thing. Those county cops out there are just massive assholes to everyone.

A group of us rented a shelter out there for a halloween party once, all adults, everyone well over drinking age, and alcohol is permitted in shelters. These assholes planted a cop in a Terminator costume to try and nail somebody for who knows what. Douchebag. But one of the guys knew the cop and he was the one busted. I was so pissed. They are fu King assholes.

@Scott Allegheny County cop. They have a station just outside South Park on Brownsville Rd.

Let me know how you want to handle the donation/membership.

Happened again today. Same spot. Cop was way more belligerent, threatened me with a $110 fine if I went back to the station with him to see the law he was citing.

mayhew
2012-04-08 16:58:02

If he couldn't recall the specific law on the spot then he's full of it. Clearly he's threatening a fine so you don't call his bluff. He doesn't even know the cards in his hands.

chemicaldave

$110 fine, for what?! if you broke a legitemate law he would have fined you on the spot. from my perspective you should have called his bluff. then even if it was a legitemate violation, and he fined you, you could have fought it in court using the argument that the cop didn't think that your transgression was serious enough to warrant the fine until you asked him to cite the law you violated. if you were still fined it would be a learning experience for you and all of us, and if not the cops would be less inclined to hassle cyclists over perceived violations of imaginary laws. win/win. (note: aside from the vast minority of police, this is a perfect example of why i mistrust and dislike cops)

Where is the link to where you pulled that from? Where is the 4 ft passing law?

Thanks.

Chris and I talked to the Sergeant at the station today. This has been cleared up and we were both reassured that Chris and his buddy were 100% correct. He was great to talk to and assured me that all the officers were aware now that the new law did not take away our right to ride two abreast.

Sorry I didn't post here sooner. Scott is right. To his credit he knows that because he called them today which I greatly appreciate.

The Sgt was very professional and kind. He made sure I knew who he was and when I could contact him if I needed anything.
