rear rack advice

so i've resurrected my commuter, now that i've got a job to commute to, and i wanted to switch my rear rack to my commuter. unfortunately, with the fenders, i haven't got the clearance.

i put it on, but the bottom of the rack "bed" (let's call it) impinged on the top of the rear fender, which then rubbed against the tire somewhat significantly. obviously not a workable idea.

so what i'm looking for is a rack that has better clearance, and costs less than my bike. it might additionally be helpful if it sits far back, since i have giant feet and heel strike can be a problem.

i've got 700x38 tires, and planet bike fenders that sit probably an inch above them. the rack that doesn't fit is the standard kraynick's rack. anyone have a different one to recommend?

have you tried just moving your fenders down? they can be quite a bit closer than 1 inch, also i've seen people cut out the section of the fender that interferes and put something on the rack to replace the fender in those sections. there are lots of options that don't involve anything new though.

I have a milk crate on my rear rack & have found that I don't need a rear fender.

i don't actually have a full inch of clearance. i was just giving a number to provide an idea of the kind of clearance i'd like from the rack.

i thought about cutting it, and the rack itself would cover the missing spot. but the idea of "ruining" the fender in such a kludgy way turns me off.

If you wanna use panniers-

Nearly as nice as a Tubus and less than half the price. I helped a friend put one on her bike awhile back and she loves it. She was just getting into commuting and having to buy a lot of stuff like fenders, panniers, etc. so she had to find something affordable.

Should be able to adjust the panniers w/this rack enough to avoid heel strike.

i really like my surly nice rack. its expensive, but its built like a tank. i was able to tote my girlfriend around amsterdam sitting on it side saddle.
