How cheap do you want it fixed? Considered going to free ride? Depending on the fix, there are a bunch of local shops that are dirt cheap.

Disc brakes would be a good thing to take to a shop if you're unsure how to fix them. Getting wheels trued shouldn't be too expensive either - I'd go to a shop to do that also. You can learn, but it does take some work to be able to do it right (I'm def. not amazing at it). Shops can usually true wheels fairly quickly if the wheel isn't damaged.

What type of brakes are on the kids bikes? You may be able to find some info online about how to adjust them. You might need to grab some new brake pads from a shop.

Another possibility is Ted's in the South Side. He did a bit of wrenching on my commuter after I was doored (his shop is around the corner from my office), and he did a fine job and charged less than a shop would for the repairs.

By far best repairs and best price I have found are at Iron City Bikes in Oakland
