Rider hit and run on Rankin Bridge tonight.

From facebook, a riding and racing buddy, John Cotter.

"I was hit by car from behind tonight crossing the Rankin bridge. The driver was going very fast and he kept going. I can move my limbs and they don't think anything is broken. My bike is completely destroyed. I am grateful to be alive."

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! WTF! That goddamn bridge has four fucking lanes (and almost a car's width shoulders if memory serves me right) and hardly any traffic this late at night.

Hopefully this guy is filing a police report and they can check cameras.

I also recall people driving in great excess of the 25 MPH speed limit and one passenger lady telling me to "use the sidewalk"

I wish that bridge incorporated multi-modal traffic. They could have gotten rid of the extra shoulders and widened the sidewalks for bike/ped use and put up fences along the side so a crash wouldn't result in going over the bridge

I'm terrified of riding the Rankin but have been trying to talk myself into it. Obviously this doesn't encourage me. Amazing that he's okay. Glad to hear that.

So far, sounds like a good outcome for something that could've been much much worse. If it was on either side of dark, he was riding with blinkies, right?

Yesterday I ran into a story and pics that reminded me just how vulnerable we really are out there, even in broad daylight.

"Fortunately his [sic] is alive, but barely. He broke his right femur, 9 ribs, his sternum, practically disintegrated both wrists, broke both arms, broke multiple fingers, he shattered his occipital bone, broke his jaw, and the worst road rash I'd ever seen. He had 4 reconstructive surgeries the first 4 days he was in the hospital. They added 19 pounds of metal to his body. He is a computer programmer and they are worried he wont be able to have movement back in his fingers. The hole in the windshield was made by his face."

f*** and double-f***. I'm glad your friend is ok and hope they catch the asswipe who did it.

Saw some brief coverage on WPXI. I guess that means that at least police responded?

Terrible. The lanes are wide, the shoulders are wide, the traffic is low and the speed limit is 25 mph. By all accounts this should be a really friendly bridge to ride over but it's not. People routinely drive 20 mph over the speed limit.

The other day I was driving over the bridge and came across a cyclist hauling ass. I just let him go and never bothered passing him. I wonder if this is him. Glad he came out it alive.

"...this should be a really friendly bridge to ride over but it's not."

Sounds a lot like the Fahey bridge in Bethlehem.

the 25 mile per hour speed limit on that bridge is a joke.

If police sets a speed trap on this bridge then they can add around (my estimates since I use it once a week) 3,000 cars * $200 fine = $600,000 per day. :) One months would collect enough money to extend trails. :)

PS I understand that as soon as police starts to enforce speed limit revenue will go down. :) But it's worth it.
