They painted them last week I belive, not that any drivers in that area pay attention!!!
Sharrows on Brighton road?
Did I miss this before? Never noticed until tonight.
yes having a white picture of a bicycle painted on the road dosent exactly make me feel safe
Yeah I know, but it gives me (a false sense of, perhaps) hope that I wont get honked at as much if people know I am "allowed" to be there cause the pictures on the road say so.
Also I didn't know that it was such a popular commuter route. As I have mentioned before, I would love to see sharrows on the narrower parts of and bike lanes in the wider portion toward the bottom of one wild place.
Bike PGH's twitter said lanes were going in and they haven't blogged about it yet. I wonder if the city screwed up again.
There was a photo in one of the local papers last week, showing the City workers installing the sharrows on Brighton. It was well received by members of the North Side bike group.
As for whether it is a popular bike route, it depends. I use portions of it (from the top of Marshall into the Park) on a regular basis). Many coming in from Brighton Heights (or beyond) do as well. (Others prefer Federal, California or Beaver, depending on starting point, and state of construction on the north side.)
Brighton is also a City designated bike route, I believe, as it forms the western part of a loop that connects Allegheny Commons with Riverview Park via Woods Run.
For the most part, I am thrilled to see the expansion of any sort of bike accommodation to areas besides the east end and roads leading to it (unfair comment, perhaps), and particularly on a route that I use often. For the most part, drivers I've encountered on Brighton have been very good to me as a cyclist. But, a little more awareness never hurts.
@rsprake 34th street in Lola/Strip has received them as well. They are the torch down ones, and a private contractor was doing it. Might be delays because of that?
There's a North Side bike group?
@Edmonds - Yes. The North Side Ped/Bike Committee. Stephanie Miller, the Main Street Manager for the Hortside Leadership Conference runs it. They're trying to do some good stuff, including laying out some nice bike routes through the North Side, promoting racks at local businesses, etc.
Cool.

Sara, what's the pavement like on Brighton? The last I remember, it was busted up 1960s concrete with a longitudinal crack exactly where I'd want my wheel to be.
Perrysville got a nice paving job in September on the US 19 part -- city line to Marshall -- but the rest of it is still crappy. I just haven't been over on Brighton to notice.
Long downhill from Marshall to California still crappy. Def. Have to take left lane. Better than it had been, but could be better, for sure.
Charles street was paved this summer. Inbound, it is the right at the first light (I think) after Marshall. It takes you right down to the sharrows on Brighton. Really nice smooth downhill.
Charles much steeper, to.me, and goes nowhere. I don't see it as a Brighton alternate. California is a better alternate.
Charles is a less steep alternative to Perrysville or Federal. Not real useful for heading up Emsworth way, but is if you're heading straight north. Charles, Brighton & California all meet at that one spot (which is right next to today's Tag-o-Rama tag, btw).
We haven't blogged about it yet because we're waiting for the project to be complete. the city didn't mess anything up. it looks like the sharrows part of the project went it, there is supposed to be legit bike lanes going in as well. the sharrows are supposed to start when you exit the Fort Duq Bridge and go up Tony Dorsett Dr to Martindale to Merchant (under the overpass) and to West Ohio. West Ohio is supposed to get bike lanes, and if you go out there, you can see where they are marked with spray paint. then the sharrows pick up again at Birghton. Where Brighton starts to climb, there is supposed to be a bike lane (climbing lane) uphill, and i thought sharrows downhill.
Just Brightoning up the neighborhood!
@erok I reeeally hope that means a paving job. The redone part of Perrysville is nice. The undone part of Perrysville and the part of Brighton you mentioned both have identical, very potholed, cracked and jarring, old concrete.
I found these today.
I was happy checking out the bride mural
(where she has the biggest booty evar) while
riding along sharrows.
I like big butts and I cannot lie.
no stu, we don't wield that kinda power. but the idea is that when/if it does get repaved, in an ideal world, they should put them back in
I wondered how long it would take for tag-o-rama to get to the bride mural.
Here's a bit more info
Is this new also? This is near the switchback ramp that takes you up to the fort duquesne bridge pedestrian bridge (where I took this pic from). It may have been there for a while, but I may not have noticed cause it has been dark usually when I commute to and from work.
Sara mentioned the ones on Merchant/Scotland, which is just out of camera range. I'm guessing they went in at the same time. I just don't get over that way too often. In or since autumn, anyway.
Oooh. I like that one. I use that road to get to CCAC when I'm coming from Greenfieldish
On a related note, anybody noticed the sharrows got an additional treatment of something bumpy and rubbery? First they put down the white stuff that looked burnt, then they put something down that has more depth and break to it.
