I do have a tag to drop...

Edit: I may be at work late today, but it is on my way home. I like to gawk, anyway.

Get to giant eagle for bread, milk, and TP!

ok, I know I don't have much sense in my head, but why wouldn't you schedule shooting winter scenes in a temperate climate... in the winter?

Not that it isn't cool, but given the work involved in completely changing the climate of the outdoors... they couldn't just wait until October? Are they photoshopping out all the leaves on the trees too? Or does Gotham not have trees? Or did they bring in their own dead looking trees...

ok, it does look cool.

They actually have large black backdrops over the trees on Mellon Square.

I have no idea, but my guess would be they want to be able to control the snow and fake snow is probably less dangerous, but like I said I have no idea and could be completely wrong.

They were probably expecting pgh to be its usual overcast self. Actually it probably is so they can control the "weather" better. I imagine it would be uncomfy for the crew to also have to be outside in cold temps. Maybe they had to film in other locations at a certain time and this is just when pgh fit into the schedule

mmm? They have over a year and a massive budget for post-production. They can pretty much do anything and I'm sure the little plastic pellets are much more controllable.

Someone on the radio this morning was saying that the fake snow is edible. Propably just some corn starch substance or something. Not going to try it though.

I'd be tempted to grab a bucketful of the snow and peddle it in bat-emblazoned 1oz glass vials on Etsy when the movie premiers...it might well be collectible by then...

Of course, glass vials of white powder may have other implications.

There will be so much CG in the end that it won't look much like Pittsburgh!

I walked down and grabbed a handful...it feels like some kind of shredded cotton and paper product.

It must be expensive to add the cold-weather steam on people's breath back in?

@reddan - that's a great idea - do it!

I have a couple of buddies in the film industry and one said this, "who in their right mind wants to film in the winter?" Then went on to say, "unless the film contains a majority of winter scenes they'll film when the climate is most favorable ... usually summer. And... most film studios wont pay for two trips to the same location when a snow machine is cheaper. "

ok, I buy the multiple seasons in a single movie thing. Also I guess I'm just bad at understanding expenditures of large sums of money... just because they have a budget larger than all the money I'll make in my entire life doesn't mean (to me) that they have to spend it...

I wonder if they'll CGI in the epic mounds of snirt that would really lend Gotham some credibility.

That huge budget is spread among a lot of people. A LOT of people. :)

additionally, it hasn't been demonstrated that it is less expensive to film wintry scenes in the winter. it doesn't necessarily seem intuitive to me that it should be so.

I also don't get people who want to eat apples in April or strawberries in January. I'm very seasonally oriented :D

The last Batman movie grossed over 1 Billion dollars globally at the box office. They can afford to make is snow in August.

It's much cheaper to create an artificial snowy environment, than have to deal with the delays and hazards of cold/snowy weather. Most movies try to shoot in places with "perfect weather" for just these reasons - cameras fail in the cold, batteries fail in the cold, in-climate weather creates dangers for the actors and messes with deadlines.

The best set is a clean and predictable set, which is nowhere in the winter.

For the out-of-towners in town for the Antiques Roadshow thing at the Convention Center, who were waiting with me at the corner of Grant & Fifth this afternoon, and saw three cars go past with snow blowing off in rather large quantities, and had no idea about Batman filming, I really wonder what was going through their minds.
