Some trail progress (riverfront trail)

Extending the trail from 21st.

Riverfront Plaza opens May 5!

From what I could tell from across the river the last little bit needs to connect the trail to the park underneath the bridge.

I had no idea they were extending the trail up from 21st street so soon. Excellent. Do you know how far it is going in this stage?

Trail under water

Here is the connection to point park, under water and not wide enough to be a trail. I still don't understand how it will connect and when. The trail around point park looks complete (and really nice) but is still fenced off.

The trail past 21st only looks to go as far as the cork factory for now as that's as far as the trail work looked to go.

The opening of the convention center trail has been pushed until the 12th.

BAH! Next you'll tell me it doesn't really connect with a river ferry... ;)

So the new section of trail by the convention center is rad.

it's super magical when you roll up to the center and there's this crazy waterfall thing that you can ride thru.

my only complaints: It could be wider. There is going to be a lot of conflict, esp when the convention center is in full use and it's a nice day. it has the vibe of a river promenade, which is great for walking, strolling, etc but maybe not the best for a shared-use facility. The part riding under the convention center past the waterfall stuff is amazing, but people cannot hear a bell or even an "on your left" over the sound of the rushing water. not a big deal, i just think there will be some major conflict.

So if I'm commuting from Greenfield to the North Shore (CCAC Allegheny) could I just ride the trail around the point rather than cutting through the city? Think it would be worth it?

I rode it tonight (and last night) - Right now the trail is only open from the 6th St Bridge going north to about 21st street in the Strip. No Point access yet. Get on from the ramp on 7th Street bridge (among other access areas from the Convention Center north).

And ditto on everything erok said "magical waterfall," "too narrow for shared use," "people cannot hear a thing in the waterfall area." Tonight, one of the riverboats was docked at the end of the fountain - lots of strolling peds around.

I keep getting the sinking feeling like this city is going to get really amazing right about the time I reach escape velocity and move west. this trail news is further evidence - magical waterfall! I think I'll have to go exploring this weekend.

I rode this yesterday on my way to work, and it is awesome. And even with any flaws it has (to which I will add: mud everywhere), it's about a billion times better than what was there before. Anyone know when the connection to the point will open up?

This will obviously be pretty busy during conventions, go slow and I don't think it will be too big an issue.

Anyone know when the connection to the point will open up?

I have been wondering that myself.

is this part of the trail likely to get flooded and close a la tenth street bypass closings? seems like it.... i havent ridden it yet, but if that area is regularly shut down to cars, it seems like this part of the trail would also be closed?

Where it's blocked off they are doing construction. There were workers out there yesterday, and it looks like they were putting in some sort of pump under the trail. I can't imagine that it would take forever.

@WillB- you're right i it is awesome and a million times better than what we had. i didn't mean to downplay the awesomeness of it. i guess i was more warning people. i imagine it will be like the station square "trail" but with nicer people.

What do people think of the trail surface "art" right around the 7th st bridge. The concrete has like "wisps" in it that i think are supposed to represent river grasses or some shit. but they just fill with dirt and make riding uncomfortable. it kinda makes it look like it was just poorly executed concrete work.

ugh.

erok

I thought the "wisps" were actually bike tire impressions that were made on a not-yet-dry-concrete surface.

I thought they were tire tracks or perhaps from the flooding.

I rode this with Erok Saturday night and yeah, I was impressed. Super awesome.

It was a bit narrow...

I always thought they were from flooding…

Riding down under the convention center yesterday with the waterfall going was incredibly awesome.

My only other complaint/suggestion/wish would be to get the bollard/planter things moved a bit at the top of the ramp. I get they are supposed to keep cars out, but they are incredibly close together right now. I assume this is something to contact the conv center about? Anyone have contacts?

Gah, I tried to find the entrances this morning and slightly less harder after work, but couldn't find them.

What's the deal with the point? All the work on the outside of it looks pretty much done

I rode under the convention center today out to 20th street. Great experience can't wait for the next 40 blocks!

I started at 7th St Bridge, rode almost all the way to the Cork Factory, came back on Smallman, R onto 11th, & hopped on the sidewalk to rejoin it. L under the Convention Center to come up past the waterfall. There's a loose plate toward the bottom. I guess I should've checked to see if it's super loose or just loud when you ride over it.

My problem with the bollard/planters is that they obscure visibility when trying to get out onto the street.

Water height: Yeah, this is gonna flood a lot. It's muddy now from recent rises. The water only needs to go up about a foot from where it is now and it's gotten the area below the 9SB wet. Clearly it's been underwater a lot recently from the ConvCtr to 7SB.
