Squirrel Hill- Forbes Ave. sidewalks

Anybody know what the deal is with the road construction on Forbes going down the hill towards CMU? It looks like they put in another sidewalk in addition to the one already there, with a strip of grass in between? wtf... A curb blowout? but that area's usually deserted of peds. I'm stumped.

This is all speculation but my theory twofold:

1) reduce the number of cars parking on Forbes. They are bumping out the curbs in places so there are fewer parking spaces.

2) traffic calming. By doing this they reduce it to one lane each way, esp. around the big turn at the top. Maybe they'll slow people down.

Of course it does reduce the space for cyclists a bit. I was just glad to discover they were finishing at least part of the repaving yesterday up near the top by Schenley drive.

rsprake - unfortunately it's nothing as cool as that. The "other sidewalks" are only near the intersections, similar to what they've done on Forbes through Oakland. So it's no longer useable as a traffic lane but cars can still park.

But - there was another thread intimating there will be a bike lane or something through there:

Perhaps they are to force bikes and cars together in line at intersections giving both equal opportunity to turn? Trying to reconcile the shared lane markings with lane narrowing devices.

Anyone have a photo? I am curious and rarely ride that way.
