SRAM PowerLock recall

Now they tell me. The chain went into the trash last fall and half the PowerLock was never found in the jail trail to junction hollow chute along 2nd avenue. I'd recently had the chain off for cleaning and figured I had put it back together wrong.

I had two break on my Cannondale last year. I threw the chain away and replaced it after the second one broke, and I know I have one spare in the saddlebag. Thanks for the link.

Wait they seriously just recalled this??!?!

The protour teams stopped running them after like

a month cause of how many broke. I didnt realize they kept making and selling the crap ones?!

I've never had any of them break on my bike for 7/8/9 speeds. But I don't think I have one on my seldom used 10s. Totally trust these things. Run them on fixed gears too. At times two of them on my polo bike so I can easily remove a section of chain for different gear ratios.

I believe this only affects the 10-speed chains and their connectors.

That's my understanding as well.

I've used 8 and 9-speed connectors for years, and never busted one.

Yeah, these do seem to be only 10-speed chains. I've had good luck with 8/9 and single speed chains with SRAM powerlinks, but this is good to know.

I gotta check my chain. I seriously need a new one (just from old age. If SRAM is willing to pay for it? Too cool.

No, it looks like they issued the recall in August 2009. The PDF that Dan linked to says "Post until January 1, 2010".

this was old news. any chains bought since september or so are fine. quality's stock was good immediately afterward. they were out of stock for a couple weeks, but after september or so they've been good.

You have to throw away the chain? You can't just discard the powerlink and put the chain together the old-fashioned way? Geez, this is gonna make me go back to five cog freewheels and friction shifters.

no manufacturers recommend reusing old pins, or pushing the same pin out ever. Shimano has sold new connecting pins for all of their chains from 8 to 10 speeds. this is nothing new. Hell, for Campy 11 you need to have a special chain tool that deforms the connecting pin so it flares out and keeps the chain pin secure.

well, to be a bit more clear, i am referring to most modern multi speed chains.

Damn, I had no idea, i''ve been pushing the pins in and out with a chain tool the same as I've been doing for 30 years, Including a 2009 ultegra 10 spd group, and I haven't had a problem. Heck, I replaced a pin on a mtn bike with a piece of nail that I swaged out with a ball peen hammer, that's been on 3 years, but then again, I'm the grandson of a WWI machinist.
