The Dutch are coming: June 21 & 22

They're partnering with the City of Pittsburgh to give a 2-day workshop at the end of the week to focus attention on making Oakland more bike-friendly. The public is invited to the opening and closing sessions. Hope you can make it.

I plan to be there. FYI, there is ample bike rack space behind Hamburg Hall.

It would be kind of cool to take them on a ride around Oakland during their visit. Give them something to think about on the way home, once they got over the shakes.

I think some of your minds might be blown by what we are presenting this evening at 5pm. Hope to see some faces from this message board at Hamburg Hall, rm 1000 at CMU.

This happened. It was great. You'll be seeing some of the designs in upcoming MOVEPGH meetings and referenced in the Oakland 2025 plan. We'll see if we can put them online.

Sorry I couldn't make it, I had other plans already... anyone want to post a quick summary?

Probably not, anyone who saw what went down their mind is blown.

I'm going to keep you all in suspense. Better to show than to tell.

Better to just do it than either - so whatever they said, I hope it's all going in next week.

While this was going on, sprite and I were being "enlightened" by some idiot who felt the need to crane her ugly melon out of her car window to ask why we were riding in the street instead of on the sidewalk. That happened literally right in front of the Bike-Pgh office. I don't remember stuff like that happening when I was in Holland.

Maybe 8 years ago I had a Pittsburgh police officer tell me I should be riding on the sidewalk instead of on the street because it was safer.

Curious to see the results as well..... I had a day-long errand on Friday and didn't get back in-town to attend the closing session.

Regardless, from my experience from the 1st day session, it was freeing and invigorating to see the potential to really change the Forbes -Fitfth Oakland area to make it a successful cycling destination.

bikeygirl - that's one of the concepts that I find so... frustrating. Pittsburgh has ridiculous potential. Like crazy awesome potential, just sitting right in front of us, right under our collective tires.

The trick is realizing it. Somehow, even when plans, laws, and funding all seem to be moving in the right direction... we get the best of intentions instead. Which is invariably better that what we had before (and for which I am always grateful, don't get me wrong), but makes it that much harder to realize the full potential of what could be.

And every time I see the title of this thread, the first thing I think of is chocolate. sigh.

Perhaps we need to send chocolate to the decision makers.

Update (snagged from the Pittsburgh forum on city-data.com):

http://www.popcitymedia.com/devnews/thinkbikes062712.aspx

Awesome that the Dutch would suggest the most advanced piece of bike infrastructure to Oakland. I just hope Patchan/City Planning (and perhaps some input from Bike Pgh) can convince city policy-makers to greenlight the project. On top of this too of course, for planners not to forget to connect it to existing infrastructure we already have *cough* Birmingham Bridge *cough*cough* and to make the rest of the Fifth Avenue corridor through Uptown more viable (cycle tracks all the way into Downtown?) as well.
