The Economist on business travel with bikes

Can any of you answer The Economist's question: "Seriously, though—do any of you know someone who brings a bike on business trips?"

I thought I read a story (in Adventure Cyclist??) about a truck driver who took his road bike with him everywhere to go on rides during his down time.

Isn't that what dahon made their bike for?

At any rate, I've worked with two people who brought their bikes with them on the road. One guy was from north carolina working in harrisburg and the other was from pittsburgh working in erie.

Although, they primarily used their bikes for exercise and not so much for commuting.

@dmtroyer- I think I read that same article, but I believe that I read it in the Rails to trails magazine. He did not get exercise while on the road, so he bikes on different rail trails.

Unfortunately, I do not get to travel for work anymore. But when I go to visit my sister in myrtle beach we take our bikes. I know its a vacation and not quite the same thing. But the first year we went when the kids were still young and both would fit in the trailer we rode to the beach everyday, it is about a ten mile ride each way, so it is kind of like a commute.

I think that if I was planning a vacation to another city (or a work trip, which to me is kind of like a vacation with some work thrown in) I would look for and hopefully find a site like bike-pgh to find out the extent that a visitor to the city or area could get around the city without needing to be a native. (ie if I were a visitor to Pittsburgh who planned on doing most of my traveling in the city by bike, I would feel pretty confident with the bike-pgh map in my pocket.)

During the Car Free Friday breakfast downtown I ran into a stage hand (electrician) traveling with the show Legally Blonde, which was appearing at the Benedum (?) at the time. She said that something like 60 percent of the crew and some of the actors travel with a bike. At the start of the summer the number was much lower, but over the summer more and more people picked up bikes to cart around with them. Since the stage hands and members of the crew are the ones who pack (and unpack) the trucks as the move from City to City, no one with the production company seems to mind.

Do I count? I travel with my bike on business. It just happens that it is bike business. But business nonetheless.

My company's main office is in Bethesda, but I work from home. Next time I have an in-person meeting, I'm absolutely bringing my bike. Not sure if I'll cycle to the office, but after hours I definitely want to be able to go for a ride.

Of course, I haven't had an in-person meeting since '06, so it might be a while. :)

Me too.

I've also met a few airline pilots who fly with bikes and an entire French band and their roadies who were rolling on Bromptons.
