throwing away bike racks
I rode past a dumpster on the CMU campus this morning that had a bunch of bike racks in it. Seems like a waste, even if they do go to be melted down as scrap metal.
It was somewhere below the cut- maybe next to the base of the now closed Roberts Drive?

How quickly can you arrange to dumpster dive them? Somebody somewhere could use those things.

They are probably throwing them away to making room to build another LEED building. /Cynicism

Man, if I had either a running van, or someone else to watch my kids, I'd be over there right now.
Rain+kids+ metal bike racks=not a good idea.

There were some racks on campus that had seriously rusted/corroded on the part that is on the ground. The end of the metal tube that is right on the ground started to rust, and it would work its way up to where they were bolted down (see http://www.bicycleparkingonline.org/sites/default/files/Coat-hanger.jpg) after which point they were seriously unstable and fell over.
I don't know whether these are the same ones, but there were several ones like that in various states of rustedness. You wouldn't want and couldn't use them without some serious repair work.

Went by and looked--they are pretty corroded but the pipe metal is also thick. Probably usable if you say embedded then in concrete. But you'd be pulling heavy racks out of the orange dumpster behind NSH. They might but want you to do that.
