Trek Rep. as Governor of Wisconsin?
The daughter of the founder of Trek Bikes, Mary Burke, seems to have entered the race for Governor in Wisconsin.
This would be so great on so many fronts.
Can you imagine a more pro-bike person in that position?

Chances look good....at least through the primary.
In the pimary the Democratic opponent is probably Tom Barrett (Mayor of Milwaukee, and former schoolmate of mine....)
He performed well last time out vs. Gov. Scott Walker, but couldn't beat the financial backing of the Koch Brothers The thought is that Mary Burke and the Trek fortune can rival the deep pockets of the Kochs..... expecially if she can coast a bit during the primary. So, I guess it is up to Tom Barrett, at least in part. Will he make a play for the democratic nomination against her, he may sap the financial resources that make her a possible winner.

THe criticism of Barrett that I heard during the last election focused primarily on the fact that he is from Milwaukee... that seems to be it's own kind of backlash (like Sestak loosing votes in W.PA due to being form the Philly area). Beyond that, I try not to read into what happened in the recall election but I certainly heard enough about it living in N.IL while it was going on.

I am so hoping that the free thinking that Wisconsin has been known for through the years is still there, and that Wisconsinites CAN elect a cyclist.
Minnesota can elect a wrestler. Why can't Wisconsin be the first (or among the first) to elect a cyclist?

Scott Walker ran as a conservative who promised to keep a close eye on the state's money, but he has governed much more aggressively, with the backing of the Tea Party and the Koch Brothers, fighting the state unions. This is what led to the recall attempt. Wisconsin is by no means a state that would have elected Scott Walker had he campaigned on the policies he's implemented.

Some folks thought it was unfair to recall him two years into his term, when he hadn't done anything illegal. And it played out as a rematch of the 2010 election (Walker vs. Barrett) and that seemed like just wanting to try again in a campaign that had lost. Wisconsin tends to elect a wide variety of people.
Both Robert Lafollette and Joe McCarthy were Wisconsin senators.

Yes, my home state of Ohio used to elect a wide variety of people as well. No longer; the state is blood red thanks to a solid decade and a half of gerrymandering. I suspect that's what's happened in Wisconsin and in numerous other states.
Anyway, we've gone far off topic and I have nothing else to say except I hope that my cynicism is misplaced and she ends up winning.
