Sounds like he doesn't have the key to that lock cause it was stolen.
Two suspicious bikes/bikers in Shadyside
I just stopped in the Market District in Shadyside (Centre at Negley) and while locking up my bike, did a double take. There were two bikes just leaned up against one of the Three Rivers bike racks, and I left a note in the handlebars of one that said "You really shouldn't leave your bike like this. - Your fellow biker"
On my way out, there were two guys (probably around age 20) standing with these bikes getting bundled up to leave. I spoke to them, saying it was pretty crazy to leave the bikes out there unsecured, especially given that one of them had a lock spiraled around the seat post that could be used for both of them. One of them spoke broken English with a heavy accent but didn't respond directly to what I was saying. I'm not sure the other guy actually said anything. I didn't want to hassle them any more, but as they rode (up the sidewalk on Centre towards Oakland) I did notice that one of them seemed to be struggling with the gears on the blue road bike.
So, I thought this was kind of suspicious--this just didn't quite add up. So, if these were stolen, here's the best I can remember:
- Gray mountain bike, with a key-operated cable lock spiraled around the seat post. Definitely thick tires, might have had some kind of shocks. Looked mid-2000s.
- Blue road bike, maybe Schwinn (but don't count on that) with stem-mounted shifters. Looked fairly vintage. At least 12 speeds.
And if they weren't stolen, maybe they will know enough to lock up next time.
Sounds like he doesn't have the key to that lock cause it was stolen. -- That's what I was thinking.
AND to make things even weirder, outside the Apple store today, there was an unlocked black/gold/gray Trek 300 kickstanded on the sidewalk. I stuck around for a few minutes, hoping to advise an absent-minded owner about some recent unpleasantness but none came.
Thanks for the new information everhart. My gray F7 that was stolen a few weeks ago still had the cable lock around the seat post as we were using another one.
If anyone happens to see it again, the serial number is __deleted__ and the police report number is 272570.
Thanks for all the extra eyes.
