Underwear bike ride 5/31

Thought I would bring it up. I heard about it at the ride of silence. OTB had undies for sale. Anyone planning to do this? Not sure that I am that brave... And I don't have any info offhand other than it is tomorrow in maybe lawrenceville?

I wondered about this when it popped up somewhere on Facebook recently. I kinda like wearing clothes, though.

http://www.facebook.com/PghUnderwearBikeRide

From that page:

"** FIRST RIDE - THURSDAY, MAY 31ST @ 8:30PM - MEET ON THE CORNER OF BUTLER AND 46TH ** The Pittsburgh Underwear Bike Ride is about having fun, respecting each others bodies, and promoting safe and responsible biking practices."

naked bike rides sounds like a chafe-y, bad idea. undie bike ride could be funny. with this starting so close to my place, i might show up with a trenchcoat, scope out the scene, and decide on the spot if i'ma ride. lacy old lady slips count as underwear, right?

I wear undies every time I ride.

The swimsuit rides we had in 2010 and 2011 actually grew out of early discussions toying with a NBR here (link).

An undies ride sounds cool, but I can't make it, even if I'd had more lead time.

I better start doing laundry tonight!!!!!!!!!

this sounds great but nobody wants to see the flabby pasty-white hairyness im hiding, and im not gonna go and be the creep with his clothes still on. maybe ill do one at the end of the summer when ive been riding more and drinking less beer.

Riding more just means that the tan lines will be even more ridiculous.

Drinking less beer is just wrongheaded.

An oldie, but a goodie:

... respecting each others bodies ...

"Buffed people bare all to protest creeps leering at bodies" ?

Did anyone get photos of this ride? I am only interested if any hot chicks showed up to represent!

Not interested if it was a giant sword fight.

It's tonight. If you're really interested in seeing skin, see my comments on my blog post for last September's PNBR (link above) for a list of links, or just google "Philly naked bike ride 2011". Dozens of videos.

I'd be surprised if 50 turn out for tonight's ride. PNBR had 2,000.

stuinmccandless

@Adam

I think that's against the general idea of "respecting people's bodies" Between the sexist and homophobic content, I disapprove. Of all the outlets for objectifying women, local bikes rides seems like the lamest one

@melange396

I think representing different body shapes is a positive thing. I'm sure a bunch of skinny fit people will already be there, but larger cyclists need representation too

sgtjonson
2012-05-31 21:42:40

yeeeah, it's comments like Adam's that would make me reluctant to go on this ride.

@edmonds59 not drinking beer IS wrongheaded. i think the happiest looking body type are the dudes with massive beer bellies and insanely muscular legs. you know they're having fun all the time.

parvipica

pierce, are you calling me fat??!!? ;-p

melange396
2012-05-31 22:34:36

Not to belabor the point, but one of the reasons FOR naked bike rides is to promote body acceptance. Not everyone is beautiful. Not everyone is young. Not everyone is fit or ideal weight or devoid of big scars or whatever. Droopy bellies, breasts, necks, etc., are a natural part of life. Get used to it.

Actually, I think it would be a good idea if a bunch of older or overweight or just-plain-plain-or-worse people DID get out for this underwear ride. Otherwise it just becomes a camera spectacle for the oglers.

If I didn't have to get up at 4:35 a.m., I would be there. (Now 7pm & I haven't left Downtown yet.)

stuinmccandless

FWIW, "Adam" is the same person who complained that fat people are the reason he can't take his bike on Amtrak. Anyone know him IRL? Did his account get hacked, is this some attempt at humor, or is he just a prick?

i got the impression that adam was trying to be funny, but maybe that was wishful thinking.

props to all who participated tonight, especially anyone who doesnt consider themselves one of 'the pretty people' but had the courage to go for it anyway.

Looks like there was a big turnout. I just saw a picture on FB.

80 riders, said the post. Much better than my prediction of 50-tops. Wow!

I think the Bridesmaid Dress Ride only got about 50, similar for the Tweed Ride.

stuinmccandless
2012-06-01 10:16:46

To be fair, the Bridesmaid Dress and Tweed Rides either required you to have an outfit or get one. Everyone has underwear. (Well, mostly everyone.)

mrdestructicity

That was a lot of fun. Lots of singing, laughing. A fun moment when we rolled through some kind of harley convention at Station Square. We made those bros look tame. A couple of them followed us to OTB.

randy
2012-06-01 18:25:04

OK so a bunch of people go riding in their underwear and I am not supposed to notice any hot women in the crowd?

That is about as ignorant as girls who wear shorts with big words written across their bums and then get mad when guys stare at them...

"I was just trying to read what you had written across your butt."

adam
2012-06-06 18:29:01

Oh by the way — I was gracious enough to not attend this year's half naked bike ride since I should lose another 30lbs and probably get a hot wax before I scare everyone off like that!

I can make fun of myself just as quickly as everyone else.

adam
2012-06-06 18:33:14

I suppose you're right: it's too much to ask that people have self control and act respectful toward other people.

rubberfactory
2012-06-06 19:16:24

Making fun of yourself doesn't make up for making fun of other people, or treating them as objects.

You could've gone to the underwear bike ride, and even looked, but you don't have to be an ass about it.

jonawebb
2012-06-06 19:25:44

RF, jonawebb, Adam's posting history may provide insight (click on his userid). I'm not confident he sticks around on threads after commenting like above.

I had a longer response typed up, but I think the vast majority of people tracking this thread already get it.

Stu, since I'm already posting, I'll go ahead and object to your statement "not everyone is beautiful". It depends on one's definition of "beautiful" which is a crazily non-uniform concept that shifts across time and culture in a very slippery way. Everybody has something about them that someone else thinks is beautiful. They may not know or believe it, but it's true.

This message board has gotten way too uptight.

I didn't realize that the liberal playbook has been modified to say guys who like good looking girls are to be called "homophobes" now...

peace

adam
2012-06-06 19:57:39

I'm pretty sure "homophobes" was referring to when you said you wouldn't go if it was gonna be all dudes.

rubberfactory
2012-06-06 20:07:55

Additionally, one point of the ride was to "respect each other's bodies"

If you're only coming to oggle women you find aesthetically appealing, while feeling uncomfortable or uninterested if people with penises show up, it's not the ride for you

So what term do you want to use for that?

sgtjonson
2012-06-06 20:44:52

"Jerk"

rubberfactory
2012-06-06 21:01:51

Wait, what, there's an updated edition of the liberal playbook?!? Damn, I'd better get a new copy.

Looks like this is happening again. Thursday June 28th @ 8:30pm. Same vectors and dress code. Hit that FB link in the post above for details..

This was one of the most fun rides I have done in a while. We had police blocking intersections, which I don't think was planned..and I hope that was an amicable thing. I heard that something was overheard on the police scanner to the effect of "Unless they are doing something illegal, we can't stop them, but we are gonna watch them". Anyone know?

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/06/28/police-searching-for-group-of-reportedly-nude-bicycle-riders-on-south-side/

This was probably breaking news.. Meaning that no info may be accurate.

stefb
2012-06-29 09:06:02

Naked or barely clothed bike riders? They must be radicals!

Glad everything worked out and you had a good time. I wish I had the energy to do this last night, but I was spent.

scott
2012-06-29 10:11:42

With the weather yesterday I'll bet it was a lovely night for it, I might have considered doing it. Although most of my drawers consist of compression shorts that look pretty much like bike shorts anyway!

edmonds59
2012-06-29 10:56:37

Doesn't matter, bill. Lots of different types of underwear

stefb
2012-06-29 11:53:26

@stefb "... but we are gonna watch them". Anyone know?

You think this is to watch for crime? Or check out some folks showing some skin?

Just not sure which part of "To serve and protect" we are dealing with here.

mick
2012-06-29 14:01:31

They were clearly blocking intersections in the hopes they could arrest the group as one for running a red light.

I wish I attended this now. Epic.

flys564
2012-06-29 15:48:30

It's funny how the news report / police response has changed. First, suspicions that the cyclists might be part of the Occupy movement (and had better be watched). Now that the fundraising aspect is known it's a police escort. Sheesh.

pseudacris
2012-06-29 16:42:07

It was confusing. It seemed like an escort. I saw no naked people btw.

stefb
2012-06-29 17:04:16

No naked people. I've arrived with the first group to the OTB. Police was waiting (no lights) along E.Carson at a gas station and other places. Three cars and the van were with the main group (with lights).

I think we got a police escort somewhere along Liberty. Coming to downtown I was riding along with the guy who had a scanner. By that time there was some confusion how we were going to get to the South Side (they already new where we were going -- one police officer asked us somewhere on Liberty).

PS I guess I am having underwear bike ride every time I am on the bike since I am a Lycra guy. :)
