Veggie food along the GAP/C&O

I'm riding to Washington DC with my Dad later this month for the first time on GAP/C&O. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for veggie food places (restaurants, groceries etc) on the way, as my Dad is not a huge fan of my veganism so I'd like to make it as straightforward as possible. I'm pretty comfortable as long as I can find a Sheetz and I'll have lots of clif bars but I figured it would be more fun if there were more "real" places to eat where we could plan on stopping.

I had cheeseless pizza once in Harper's Ferry (fine though not exciting). Otherwise I suspect options will be limited until you hit the DC area, where there are many great places to eat. If you find anything good I'd be interested to know.

Nice. Looks like there might be some options in Cumberland too (Mexican or Italian). If you're in DC and have time to hop onto the metro to Maryland for dinner, this place is sublime (entrees are great and the vegan coconut ice cream is excellent): http://mandalayrestaurantcafe.com/

I'll actually be putting up a post at my website (www.bike-the-gap.com) about veggie/vegan/raw eats along the trail soon. Some great choices are Mountain City Coffeehouse in Frostburg, Lucky Dog Cafe in Confluence, Firefly Grill/Backyard Gardens in Ohiopyle, and Tin Front Cafe/Smoke BBQ in Homestead (on 8th Avenue). I'd recommend going to the Martin's supermarket in Connellsville over any of the area restaurants (even if I wasn't veggie). The Trailside cafe in West Newton has a few options too. Good luck.

And all of those other than Tin Front Cafe have meat options too for your dad.

@pratt Thanks, looks like a sweet place to stop.

@mboyd I will let you know what else I find... def looking forward to some tasty food in DC too. Mandalay looks great.

@sarapgh2 that would be AWESOME and super helpful, thanks! If you haven't posted by the time we're headed out, I may send you a PM to bug you for tips.

I was in the same boat: vegan and used to lead trips on the trail. Desert Rose is great but check the hours of operation, they may close up shop early. Might be 6pm.

In Frostburg check out

Mountain City Coffeehouse

60 East Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532

(301) 687-0808 ?

mtncitycoffeehouse.com

In Connellsville you can hit up Bud Murphys. They have a Dr. G's pizza that's all veggies with no cheese and there are tons of non veg options there. http://www.budmurphys.com/

In Confluence there's the Lucky Dog Cafe.

In Harpers Ferry I think this is the spot for you, but my memory is a little fuzzy on this one:

Canal House Creamery & Cafe

1226 W Washington St, Harpers Ferry, WV

(304) 535-2880 ?

There's a Sheetz in Hancock, MD too.

I've had good luck with a big stack of tortilla, peanut butter and jelly or refried beans and salsa.

Have fun!

Sweet - that's a good list - OK, I am going to start mapping out all of these places. Thanks a lot!

Diamond Mart in Confluence. There is a supermarket in Cumberland, Connellsville, Sheperdstown and Hancock close to the trails.Subway has salads and are cheaper than a cafe. I will be backpacking south in late April.See you on the trail.

Sweet, grocery is always good. Subway is a mainstay for this stuff... so we may be snacking on some Subway. Double footlong veggie.

The Diamond Mart in Confluence is a produce store. There is a grocery store in Confluence also. There is a Subway in Meyersdale and Hancock. Pizza Hut in Hancock got a all you can eat salad bar.
