The City will be joining the ACA at the summer picnic this Wednesday night by honoring the late Bud Harris with an official renaming of the soon-to-be known as "the former Washington Boulevard Oval." Bud Harris was a well-known photographer who became very involved in promoting cycling in Pittsburgh over 20 years ago. He was a bike shop owner, race promoter and was a key catalyst in the creation of the cycling and recreation facility at 1401 Washington Boulevard. Bud was co-founder, along with Eric Schaffer, of the Thrift Drug Classic (TDC). The TDC was a professional bike race in the city of Pittsburgh from 1991 to 1997. At the time, it was considered the toughest one day race in North America. Lance Armstrong won it twice.
The announcement ceremony is set to begin at 5:45 p.m. Please come early to help honor Bud for his efforts in helping to make cycling possible for us all and be a small part of cycling history in Pittsburgh. Members of Bud's family will be on-hand and an official marker will be placed at the track in his memory. City representatives will be there to read the official notice, proclaiming the facility the "Bud Harris Cycling Track."
The weather is looking perfect for Wednesday's races.
