One alternative might be to hop the T to West Liberty Cycles on his lunch break. The Dormont stop is across the street from there.

If you find out what size tube and really are in a bind I'd be happy to meet him somewhere with a tube.

Email me for that.

There no place downtown to my knowledge.

@Chris's suggestion is a good one, I've tried to get to REI by bus on my lunch but it takes too long. The T is probably a quicker option

You could get to Kraynick's on an 86B getting off at Millvale or Winebiddle, but I'm not sure of his hours.

If you need levers and a pump, those can be provided too.

this might be a good time to bug Venture Outdoors. They're practically in the middle of downtown and are open year round.

I'm not saying they need to open a store, but maybe keep a small stock of tubes and whatnot. A couple of racks at wood and forbes couldn't hurt either.

I have a 700 35/43, patch kit, air pump and other tools at USX.

And the Venture Outdoors idea is a good one.

oh my gosh, EVERYONE! Thank you for all the suggestions! A coworker had a patch kit and he already has a pump.... I'll suggest he bugs Venture Outdoors a little too. They totally could/should carry a few of these items! Thanks again for all the suggestions and help. If the patch doesn't work I'll have him contact those of you who offered supplies! Again, thanks!

glad you got it working. golden triangle bike rental by the jail also has some supplies, although they probably aren't open for the season yet.

For future reference, the 77D and 77F take you to within a block or so of Kraynicks. Get off on Friendship just past West Penn Hospital and walk a long block north (away from the hosital) to Penn.

77d and f are also rack and roll routes so he could take the bike with him.

Is Golden Triangle Bike Rentals open this time of year? I would think they might have some spare parts lying around too...? I think they aren't open right now unfortunately but otherwise that would be a good option.

@netviln That's what I did when I broke a chain on the way into work one day. Rack and rolled it out to Kraynik's left it for a day or two, and did the whole thing over againin reverse to pick the bike up. I think I missed a whopping 10 minutes of work in the process, since I could get out an back on my lunch hour.

Ditto gimpPAC's recommendation for the bike rental place.
