@ hcurtis your obsession with these neighborhoods is getting old. I don't even know why you still post on here no one wants to hear anything you have to say.

I lock my stuff up wherever I go, because I like my stuff, and I wouldn't even have my stuff if I didn't want to keep it. I don't go crazy because you have to keep in perspective that ultimately stuff is just stuff, and it's not more important than life, or experiences, or people.

I lock stuff up regardless of location, because I find it's just as likely to be stolen by some idiot over-privileged suburban white kid as anyone else. They don't have to worry about having their heads beaten in.

@MichaelArtman: Cities can be different from the country, eh? Probably doesn't hurt that most of the people at the park are not actually FROM Ohiopyle (so it's not like they're going to rip off a bike and ride home.) And the sorts of people who would do so are unlikely to drive down to a state park with a trailer to rip off a bunch of bikes. Still, paranoia saves time, money and effort. I'd have locked my bike, too.

(I'll also bet a significant number of those bikes were rentals, too.)

Whoa. Didn't think I'd see garbage like that on this board.

I was in a bike shop once and listened while a guy went through a detailed story about how his two multiple-thousands-of-dollars bikes were stolen off his roof rack at Ohiopyle. He was in a store getting beer, just gone for a few minutes, and came back to find them gone.

So, really, be careful about your bike, even in the country.

If you have something you wish to keep you should lock it up, no matter the company.

Say what you mean. The structure of the sentence "There is no x down there" implies that x is people, not neighborhoods. Apparently you don't like the people in East Liberty/Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar/Larimer for some reason.

Look, we're all aware that certain areas have greater crime. But do you really believe that more than a small percentage of the occupants of any neighborhood in Pittsburgh are criminals? If so, I have nothing more to say to you. If not, then please stop painting all occupants of these neighborhoods as criminals.

One is 319,000 with on street parking. We have

sold a few in the past year around the 275

mark. so ummm yeah

Back to the original post -- last week we passed through southern Michigan and spent a day at Warren Dunes State Park. Nate carefully u-locked our three single bikes together (with three locks) and propped them up on the outer edge of a big parking lot. When we got back a few hours later, our bikes were turned the other direction and tipped over. Presumably someone had thought about taking them, but was discouraged by the many locks. Or so we guessed.

I guess if a lot of people frequent a certain area, at least a few are likely to be dishonest.

if you go to a bike park you will see many, many downhill and freeride bikes worth thousands of dollars each lying around unlocked. i still lock mine to my truck when i'm not riding it. its worth more than the truck, i'm not risking it.

Why can't people be honest? Goodness! Just look statistics up. Do you think people can magically change statistics? They are numbers and are not up for negotiation. Just be honest. People read into things way too much. Do you want me to come on here and say Homewood is a great area to live to someone looking to buy a home? Get over it. There are bad areas in our region.

I always lock mine, Sheldon Brown style. 1 u-lock through the rear wheel inside the rear triangle, and a cable with another lock around the front wheel. I like my stuff and I want to keep it.

hcurtis's point would have been more convincing if the map didn't show Lincoln-Larimer to be not the worse neighborhood around. The hill, parts of Oakland, etc. are worse.

Mr. Marvelous's point would be more convincing if he wasn't sort of wound up quite a bit in these message boards. I recall a series of stupid comments about me that went on and on until I finally told him to shut up.

Edit: Also, if he didn't call himself Mr. Marvelous. I know there's some irony intended there, but it's not the most credible name if you're trying to police the message board.

I always lock the back wheel to the frame to the bike rack, and then using a different, smaller u-lock, I lock the front wheel to the frame. If I'm running in somewhere real quick, I always think that maybe just the lock on the back wheel will suffice, but then I remember how ieverhart's front wheel was stolen in Lawrenceville. You can never be too careful no matter where you might be.

@ericf - is that a bike of yours? those are some pretty wicked tires.

When commuting, I usually do the one U-Lock through the rear wheel and back triangle, and just use a cable through the front wheel to save on weight. But that two u-lock Sheldon Brown would certainly deter the maximum amount of thieves. Only way to be more safe is to attach a trained guard dog to a U-Lock and your bike.

Back to my original topic of the thread - another weird thing about Ohiopyle was the lack of places to lock your bike to. They have plenty of those racks you just stick a front wheel in that leave you no place for a lock, but thats it. Luckily, there is plenty of steel/iron fencing around there, which isnt ideal, but welcomed.

But again, as a few people mentioned, a lot of those bikes laying around very well could have been rentals. I know when I rent things (my apartment, for example) I just leave everything unlocked... since I don't actually own it, I have no regard for its safety.

oi, I lock up rentals. I'd rather not pay for something I used temporarily and never wanted to buy outright in the first place. That, and all the rental people I've known have been too nice for me not to be careful with their stuff. Like borrowing a friends stuff - I take extra care because it's not mine.

Ohiopyle is funny. I've seen the same situation - bikes everywhere unlocked. I tend to go mainly during the winter now, when the place is both mysteriously beautiful and mysteriously empty. But I've known people to get things stolen there year-round, so I'm wary.

Simply because you see all the people around you not locking their stuff, doesn't mean it isn't getting stolen left and right.

It's a Surly Pugsley, and back to the thread, I have had a bike stolen from a hallway inside an apartment building. Ever since then, I am extra cautious. I like using 2 locks because it will prevent the bending / twisting type attack that was going on at Trader Joe's.

This is interesting because I'm looking very closely at the Pittsburgh Police statistics and come to a different conclusion.

So you're saying "Hey, statistically the majority of crimes committed (or at least enforced crimes) in Pittsburgh are by African Americans, they must be criminals" and I'm saying "Hey, even though the African American population is only 25% of the population, they're account for more stop and frisks, weapons, and drug violations"

Now I know statistically they do more stop and frisks in black neighborhoods and 2/3rds of the stop and frisks are for black people. Half of all stop and frisks result in no further action.

So doesn't it make sense that, all things being equal, if you stop more black people, you're more likely to find black people in that subset that also are committing crimes?
