Wouter Weylandt dies in Giro crash
Just saw this as a FB update from a friend in the UK. Was hoping I had somehow misunderstood something. What a shame....
So tragic. There was a good article in the trib online today (from the AP I'm sure) about him. He had just changed teams and was riding with the Schleks and Cancellara. Sad day for the Giro and racing.
I read that he thought the move to a new team and the opportunity to ride with the Schlecks and Cancellara were his big break in cycling. Tragic is almost too weak a word.
Forgive me for splitting hairs, but...
It is sad. But it is not tragic. He was participating in a professional race, and that carries a lot of risk - far beyond what any of us would normally face while riding. He accepted those risks, and unfortunately those risks caught up with him.
It is sad. But it is not tragic. Tragic is Don Parker.
