wtb smallish bike for my wife

here's the situation: my wife has expressed an interest in trail riding with me as part of her effort to stay in shape and lose weight. she has ridden some of the trails with me and does pretty well for someone who's only on the bike 6-10 times a year. she currently has an ancient trek antelope mb that she says is fine for her, but when i suggest she take a ride without me she complains that the bike is so heavy that she has a hard time lifting it in and out of our van.

i have to agree with her the bike is heavy and slow, not to mention it has such low grade, outdated components on it that even with a fresh tune up it never runs right.

i'm probably going to look at some new hybrid or touring style bikes with riser bars (not sure she's ready for drops) this week. i just wanted to look here first to see if anyone maybe had a bike that would meet our needs that they were ready to part with. i'm pretty sure that the experience of riding a lighter, more comfortable bike that runs like it should, combined with the thrill of owning a new (to her) bike will inspire her to ride more.

the specifics: i am looking for a hybrid or touring style with riser bars. she is 5'1'' tall so i'm thinking maybe a 48 or 50 frame, 700 wheels. my price range for used is $100-$300. if you have a bike like this or have any suggestions for a new bike (i'm willing to pay more for new) that fits this description please let me know. thanks.

you should check out the used bikes on Thick's blog. There's been a lot recently that seem to meet your criteria.
